I’ve
lived a hard life. Many of us have. Often times when I think, it can’t
get any worse it usually does. Life is hard and there is no guide book,
no set of rules that produce instant easy results. There is no template
which to follow, a template that sets life up for you and you just fill
in the blanks.
What
has always given me hope and encouragement in times of despair is the
compassion of others. People who have said to me, “I care about what
you are going through. I care about how you feel. I want to
help
you back up.”
There
doesn’t seem to be enough compassion. I look for it. I listen for it. I
want to see it in action, see it thriving in our society, hear it
pulsing through the fabric of our beings.
So I
created this website, hoping to initiate a contagion of compassion and
build a place for thought provoking conversation.
Contagion
is an interesting word which we typically associate with disease. But
it also means an influence that spreads rapidly or the rapid
communication of an influence such as a doctrine or emotional state. I
want to do my part to spread compassion as rapidly as I can because we
all want it, we all need it. And I’m hoping that maybe it will catch on.

Seeking to be more
compassionate can be one of the most challenging aspects of spiritual
growth. But it can also be one of the most rewarding. How compassionate
are you? When we think of ourselves, we often think of our most
redeeming qualities and consider ourselves to be good people. And we
are. My question to you all is, can you be more compassionate?

I
recently saw Light at the Edge of the World: Himalayas—a
Wade Davis
anthropological and spiritual journey into the Himalayas of Nepal. I
learned some interesting information about Buddhism and its practice
but what I found most amazing is when I learned about the Tibetan nun
who has devoted over 45 years of her life to solitary retreat and
praying for the welfare of all sentient beings.
Every waking moment of her day is devoted entirely
to compassion towards all mankind.
Wow.
No matter what your religious conviction, this is profound. To devote one’s self entirely to the betterment of humanity. I'm not nearly as noble as this Tibetan nun but I'm not deterred. I will do my part, that which I can, to further the development of humanity. |
Om
Mani Padme Hum is a Buddhist mantra that is thought to
invoke the
powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig—the embodiment
of compassion. Whether
its said out loud, to one’s self or reviewed in written form, it is
said to have the same effect.
Each
syllable is blessed to help you achieve
perfection in a distinct practice.
Strive
to achieve perfection in the
practice of generosity
by reciting, “OM.” Om Mani Padme Hum
